Angie feels guilty because she’s crossed a professional boundary as a social worker.  Do you think she should have gone to the farm to pick up Darwin when she was off-duty?   How important is it to “follow the rules” as a professional?  Darwin is a person with a disability.  Would that affect your ability to deal with behavior such as flirting, asking for favors, etc.

Think about a time you got lost.  Did you feel anxiety and/or fear?  What do you usually do when you’re lost—stop and ask directions?  Check a map?  Keep driving and hope for the best?  Have you ever discovered something new as a result of being lost?

In Chapter 2, Angie reminisces about her parents.  How do you think Angie’s upbringing influenced her own values?  Have you known people who made sudden radical changes or took political risks?  Did their actions change the course of their lives and/or the lives of their families?

Mel and Darwin have different ideas about how to round up the stray heifers.  Angie witnesses the conflict between them but remains silent and endures the tension.  Why didn’t she apply her social worker skills and try to help them process their differences?
